GP Indemnity Top Up

Since April 2019, the Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice (CNSGP) has provided coverage for NHS primary medical service providers. However, it excludes certain activities like private work and travel injections. We offer flexible indemnity cover for GPs in partnership with established providers, ranging from £1,000,000 to £10,000,000, including a medico-legal helpline and 25-year run-off cover upon retirement.

The Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice (CNSGP) came in to force April 2019, covering all providers of NHS primary medical services, including out of hours providers. The scheme extends to all GPs and others working for general practice who are carrying out activities in connection with the delivery of primary medical services – including salaried GPs, locums, students and trainees, nurses, clinical pharmacists, agency workers and other practice staff.

The CNSGP covers clinical negligence, but will not extend that cover to any private work undertaken, travel injections, occupational health activities, good samaritan acts, medical report writing or legal defence for inquests or GMC inquiries/investigations.  These need to be covered elsewhere to ensure you do not leave yourself vulnerable.

In conjunction with an established medical indemnity provided we are able to arrange cover for GP’s to cover the gaps left by CNSGP, whether they do any private work or not.  Cover is flexible and limits range from £1,000,000 to £10,000,000 dependent upon your needs or requirements.  Cover is contractually based and provides a medico legal helpline staffed by qualified professionals, as well as giving run off cover of 25 years when you retire or cease practice.

Call us on 0800 163 870 or email [email protected] to enquire about how we can help you and your practice.

The cost of GP indemnity insurance can vary widely depending on several factors, including:

  1. Country or Region: The cost differs by location due to variations in healthcare systems, legal environments, and insurance regulations.
  2. Type of Coverage: The level and extent of coverage chosen (e.g., claims-made vs. occurrence-based policies) will impact the premium.
  3. Practice Setting: Whether the GP works in a high-risk area, such as emergency medicine, or in a low-risk setting, like general practice.
  4. Experience and Claims History: A GP’s years of practice and history of previous claims or complaints can affect the premium.
  5. Policy Provider: Different insurance providers offer varying rates and benefits.

Here, in the UK, for example, as of recent data:

  • The Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice (CNSGP) provides indemnity for NHS GPs at no direct cost to the GP, as it is funded by the government.
  • Private GP practices and those providing non-NHS services may need additional private indemnity cover, which can range from a few hundred to several thousand pounds annually, depending on the specifics of the practice and coverage needed.

For a more accurate estimate, it is advisable for GPs to contact us at MIC directly for tailored quotes and coverage options.

GP indemnity, or General Practitioner indemnity, refers to insurance coverage that protects general practitioners (GPs) against claims of clinical negligence or malpractice. This type of insurance is essential for medical professionals as it provides financial protection and legal support in the event that a patient brings a claim against them for alleged errors, omissions, or negligent acts in the course of their medical practice.

Here are the key aspects of GP indemnity:

  1. Coverage: GP indemnity covers legal costs, settlements, and compensation payments arising from claims of clinical negligence. This includes misdiagnosis, errors in treatment, and other issues that could lead to patient harm.
  2. Types of Policies: There are generally two types of indemnity policies:
    • Claims-Made Policies: These cover claims made during the period the policy is active, regardless of when the incident occurred, as long as it is reported during the policy period.
    • Occurrence-Based Policies: These cover incidents that occurred during the policy period, regardless of when the claim is made, providing long-term protection even after the policy has ended.
  3. Providers: GP indemnity can be provided by, private insurance companies such as MIC, or government schemes, depending on the country and healthcare system.
  4. Government Schemes: In some regions, like the UK, GPs working within the National Health Service (NHS) are covered by state-backed indemnity schemes such as the Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice (CNSGP). This scheme covers NHS services, while private work may require additional coverage.
  5. Importance: Indemnity insurance is crucial for GPs to protect their professional reputation and financial stability. It ensures that they have access to legal defence and can cover the potentially high costs of negligence claims.
  6. Non-NHS Work: For GPs involved in private practice or non-NHS services, separate or additional indemnity coverage is necessary to ensure comprehensive protection.

In summary, GP indemnity is a vital form of insurance for general practitioners, safeguarding them against the financial and legal consequences of clinical negligence claims and allowing them to focus on providing quality patient care.
